Services

In general we distinguish between two interpreting techniques. Neither of these techniques is worse or better than the other, they simply suit different situations better.

Simultaneous Interpreting

A little break in the booth

In simultaneous interpreting the spoken word is interpreted simultaneously. Thereby the audience can follow the events in real-time. This technique is mainly used when the interaction between the participants is of great importance. We, the interpreters, are not in the midst of events, we are, however, very close so that presentations, gestures and the speaker’s body language can be perfectly included in our interpretation.
Simultaneous interpreting can also be applied in an entirely different situation – when we leave our booth and are actually in the middle of everything happening. During factory tours, for example, we follow the group and interpret the spoken words via a special tour guide system. The audience receives headphones, the interpreters a microphone each and headphones as well and interpret the speaker’s explanations simultaneously.
Another kind of simultaneous interpreting is whispered interpreting. This, however, is only suitable for very small groups with up to three listeners whom we whisper the spoken word to.
Since simultaneous interpreting is a highly demanding mental activity and requires maximum effort we work in a team of two in most cases and switch every 30 minutes so that we can ensure good quality of our interpretation.

Consecutive Interpreting

The second interpreting technique is called consecutive interpreting. In this process we do not interpret simultaneously but with a small time difference, i. e. the speaker finishes a few sentences which will then be transported to the target language by the interpreter. This method is obviously much more time-consuming. However, it is highly suitable for negotiations with several participants, so that everyone can give their opinions on the topic.
